Romans 8 Study

Romans Chapter 8 - Summarize first few verses in our study.

Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit.

So, letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.

But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit, if you have the Spirit of God living in you.

Thankful for the Holy Spirit

G.R.A.C.E. Acronym

G = Gods gives

R = rest from all our WORKS - Salvation through FAITH

A = at the time we confess all our sins;

C = choose to serve Him and obey His Word-Crucify the flesh

E = eternal life is ours- Heaven Bound!

What a YOKE!

What we feed our minds affect our actions, what we say, do and listen to. Guard your heart.

Today study in Romans Chapter 7 - This is a tough chapter and takes some consistent study to wrap the teaching around our minds. It’s well worth the time and effort to grasp the meaning of Law and Grace! Thank you, Jesus,!!

Just sharing a small portion of this chapter today: Vs. 21-25 – “I have discovered this principle of life, that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong! But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind.   This makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me.  Oh, what a miserable person I am!” (Paul speaking in the Word of God)

Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death?  THANK GOD!! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So, you see, in my mind I really want to obey God's Law, but because of my sinful nature, I am a slave to sin.

I have discovered this principle of life, that when I want to do what is right, I do wrong.

One of the verses that goes along with our study on Chapter 7 was found in Matthew 11:29-30

"My yoke is easy, and my burden is light" - This verse looked up in the commentary says this:

His burden is light, does not mean we won't have trials, heartaches and labor in our Christian lives. But it does mean that we do NOT have to bear them alone. We are yoked with one who gives sufficient GRACE for every time of need. To serve Him is not bondage but perfect freedom.

JH Jowett said this quote: "The fatal mistake for the believer is to seek to bear life's load in a single collar. God never intended a man to carry his burden alone. Christ therefore deals only in yokes. A Yoke is a neck harness for two, and the Lord Himself pleads to be one of the two.

He wants to share the labor of any task we have. The secret of peace and victory in the Christian life is found in putting off the collar of "self" and accepting the Masters relaxing yoke".

The commentary also says: "take my yoke upon you" means to enter into submission to His will, to turn over control of one's life to Him "and learn from me". As we acknowledge His Lordship in every area of our lives, He trains us His ways.

The REST that one experiences in service to Christ takes over when we STOP trying to be great. "The burden is light". This does not mean there are no problems in this life.

Romans 6 Notes

Romans Chapter Six (6) Bible Study Notes

The point is:

  • Ø I died to the power of the Law
  • Ø NOW I am united with Jesus
  • Ø AS A RESULT: I can produce good deeds and I was controlled by my old sinful nature prior GRACE.
  • Ø NOW I am released from the Law
  • Ø I died to the Law -it was nailed to the cross with Jesus and I died with Jesus when I got saved.
  • Ø NOT a captive to the Law
  • Ø Law has no power over me
  • Ø NOW I can serve God!
  • Ø I NOW have a new way of living in the Holy Spirit

Offering ourselves to God means setting our minds on loving our Heavenly Father.

Like a pin on a map, where your mind is set, our attitudes and actions will follow.

When our minds are se on God, we put Him first and we spend time with Him and in His Word, in worship and prayer and with people that love Him.

We can’t tame our tongues, but God can, as we give them to Him as instruments of righteousness.

Sing Gods praises, learn to recite scripture.

Start godly conversations at home or work or wherever you can. Ask Gods help to speak words of encouragement.

Romans 6:16-18

The FIRST reason grace does not allow Christians to sin is, sin is slavery. Whey would anyone whom God has delivered from slavery return to it again? God changes our natures when He saves us, but the nature of sin does not change.

Sin is always an evil slave driver. If you give way to greed, you become a slave to greed. If you give way to sexual sin, you become a slave to lust. If you give room to bitter thots, bitterness will corrode your life.  TAKE EVERY THOT CAPTIVE TO THE OBEDIENCE OF JESUS CHRIST. SUBMIT TO GOD, RESIS THE DEVIL AND HE HAS TO FLEE FROM US!!!!!!!!!!

The SECOND reason grace does not allow Christians to sin, is sin leads to death.

Adam and Eve chose to believe satan’s lie rather than Gods Word. They took the fruit and ate it. What happened? They died.

They died in their spirits instantly. Their unbroken fellowship with God died and they hid themselves from God. Their personalities began to die, they lied and shifted blame on each other. At last, their bodies died, for God said, “Dust  you are and to dust you will return”- SIN BREAKS RELATIONSHIPS

The THIRD reason grace does not allow Christians to sin is, Jesus has delivered them from sins tyranny. But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have been set free from sin.

The FOURTH reason grace does not allow Christians to sin is CHRISTIANS HAVE A NEW ABILITY TO OBEY. “Though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart”

The FIFTH reason grace does not allow Christians to sin is Christians have a new master, Jesus has purchased believers for Himself. RENEW YOUR MIND WITH THE WORD OF GOD.

Chapter SEVEN (7)

I personalized the first portion of our study verses. (bfc)

Now dear Barbara, you are familiar with the Law-don’t I know that the law applies only while I am living?? (But I am dead – my old self died when I asked Jesus into my heart- I am dead in Jesus so I am dead to the law!!!)

For example- when a woman marries, the law binds her to her husband as long as he is alive. BUT IF HE DIES, the law of marriage NO LONGER APPLIES TO HER. So while her husband is alive, she would be committing adultery if she married another man. But if her husband dies, she is FREE from the law and does not commit adultery when she remarries.

So, Barbara- THIS IS THE POINT---- You died to the power of the law when you died with Jesus!!!!!

And NOW I am united with the ONE who was raised from the dead.

AS A RESULT—I can produce a harvest of good deeds for God. When I was controlled by my old nature and sinful desires, that worked within me, the law aroused these evil desires that produced a harvest of sinful deeds – death.

But NOW I have been released from the law because I died to it and it no longer has its captive power over me. NOW I can serve God, NOT in the old way of obeying the letter of the law, but in the new way of living in the Spirit.

WE DIED 3 times – vs. 4-6

Whats the difference anyway??

GRACE = Grace should be the “motivation” that gives us power over sin and the desire to avoid it.

Commentary Notes on Romans Chapter Six  Matthew Henry

Does the teaching of the gospel (Salvation by grace through faith) permit or even encourage sinful living?

Paul shows us the difference between the believer’s position and his practice.

His position is his standing in Christ. His practice is what he is or should be in everyday life.

Grace puts us into the position, then teaches us to walk worthy of it. Our position is absolutely perfect because we are in Christ. Our practice should increasingly correspond to our position. We should be Becoming more and more conformed to His image in the meantime.

 Shall we continue in sin??

  1. You cannot, because you are united to Christ. Reasoning v. 1-11
  2. You need not, because sin’s dominion has been broken by grace. Appealing v- 12-14
  3. You must not, because it would bring sin in again as your master. Commanding v15-19
  4. You had better not, for it would end in disaster. Waring v 20-23

When Jesus died to sin, He died as our Representative. He died not only as our Substitute-that is, for us or in our place; but He also died as our Representative-that is, as us. Therefore, when He died, we died.

To which baptism is Paul referring to in this chapter? When a person is saved, he is baptized into Christ Jesus in the sense that he is identified with Christ in His death and resurrection. This is not the same as the baptism in the Spirit, though both occur simultaneously.

When Paul speaks of baptism here, he is thinking both of our spiritual identification with Christ ad of its portrayal in water baptism as he reminds his readers how they were “buried” and “planted together” in the “likeness” of Christ’s death. Baptism is not a requirement for salvation, it should be the invariable public sign of it.

Water baptism gives a visual demonstration of baptism into Christ. It pictures the believer being immersed in death’s dark, waters (In the person of the Lord Jesus), and it pictures the new man in Christ rising to walk in newness of life. There is a sense in which a believer attends the funeral of his old self when he is baptized.

The crucifixion of the old man at Calvary means that the body of sin has been put out of commission. The body of sin does not refer to the physical body. Rather, it means indwelling sin which is personified as a tyrant, ruling the person. The last clause in vs. 6 shows that this is the meaning: that we should no longer be slaves of sin. They tyranny of sin over us has been broken.

Death no longer has dominion over Him. Death did have dominion over Him for three days and nights, but that dominion is forever passed. Christ can never die again!

Blessins and Prayers that The Holy Spirit of God is helping ALL of us to understand GRACE and what it means to avoid Sin in our lives. Thankful to share, sow seeds and shake salt. Bfc

We reckon ourselves dead to sin when we respond to temptation as a dead man would. One-day Augustine was accosted by a woman who had been his mistress before his conversion. When he turned and walked away she said, “It’s me”! Quickening his pace, he called back over his shoulder, “Yes, I know, but it’s no longer me!”. What he meant was that he was dead to sin and alive to God. A dead man has nothing to do with immorality, lying, cheating, gossiping, or any other sin.

Now that we are alive to God in Christ Jesus, this means that we are called to holiness, worship, prayer, service, and fruit bearing. We should not let sin reign in our mortal bodies by obeying its evil desires.  At Calvary the reign of sin was ended by death. Now we must make it so practically, our cooperation is needed. Our obligation is to turn control of our members to God.

Sin does have the upper hand over a person who is under the law. Why? Because the law tells him what to do but doesn’t give him the power to do it.  And the law stirs up dormant desires in fallen human nature to do what is forbidden. It’s the old story that “forbidden fruit is sweet”.

Sin does not have dominion over the person who is under GRACE. The believer has died to sin. He has received the indwelling Holy Spirit as the POWER for holy living. And he is motivated by love for the Savior, not by fear of punishment.

Those who are afraid of GRACE insist that it gives license for sinning. Paul meets this error head-on by asking the question, then flatly denying it. We are free from the law but not lawless. GRACE means freedom to serve the Lord, not to sin against Him.

The phrase “Free from sin” does not mean that we no longer had a sinful nature. Neither does it mean that we no longer commit acts of sin. The context shows that it is referring to freedom from sin as the dominating power in our lives.

Is it Okay????

Yesterday we "personalized" the Chapter Six and made it become a Life Application Study. Today we have read the chapter again, and we see some more wisdom from the Holy Spirit. Love Gods Word!!

Chapter Six starts out asking if it is okay for us to sin, because God has so much GRACE. NO its not okay and the chapter tells us over 10 times it's not okay, even with all of Gods GRACE. Lets share a few of the verses that tells us NOT to sin. And knowing Gods GRACE will give us help NOT to sin.

What then shall we say? Shall we continue in sin that GRACE may abound? GOD FORBID!

How shall we that are dead to sin, live any longer in sin?  Knowing this, that our old man/woman is crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be destroyed and henceforth we should NOT serve sin.

Likewise, reckon ye also yourselfs to be dead to sin and alive unto Jesus.

Let NOT sin reign in your mortal bodies.

Yield NOT your body to sin.

For sin shall NOT have dominion over you, we are under GRACE.

What then? Shall we sin because we are NOT under the law but under GRACE?

Know ye not that to whom you give yourselfs to as a servant, his servant you will be; whether sin unto death, or obedience unto life.

God be thanked, that we WERE servants of sin.

Yield yourself to right living.

But NOW being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have fruit unto everlasting life.

So, It's NOT OKAY for us to sin and flippantly think : "Oh I sinned again, its okay, I'm cool with God, He loves me and His grace will cover me". That is not the attitude we are to have when we are saved and supposed to be crucifying the flesh daily.

Jesus paid the price to give us power OVER sin, so we can go to Him everyday asking for help, through His GRACE, not to sin.

Christmas is Jesus Birthday: Father help us remember this, and what Jesus was born and died for, and not take advantage or grieve the Holy Spirit of God with the wrong attitude toward sin and Grace. Thank you Jesus for your truth and word! amen

Making It Personal really helps!

I can go BOLDLY before the throne of Grace - to Jesus- and get the strength and help to do what Romans Chapter Six tells me PERSONALLY.

PERSONALIZING Romans Chapter Six:

Placing ourselves in the reading of God’s word – Life Application Study – Placing “I” or “ME” everywhere it says the words -                     WE, OUR, or YOURSELVES.   This makes a big difference in remembering what the Word is speaking to ME. It helps.

6 Well then, should I keep on sinning so that God can show ME more and more of his wonderful grace? 2 Of course not! Since I have died to sin, how can I continue to live in it? 3 Or have I forgotten that when I was joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, I joined him in his death? 4 For I died and was buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now I also may live a new life.

5 Since I have been united with him in his death, I will also be raised to life as he was. 6 I know that MY old sinful self was crucified with Christ so that sin would lose its power in MY LIFE. I am no longer slave to sin. 7 For when I died with Christ I was set free from the power of sin. 8 And since I died with Christ, I know I will also live with him. 9 I am sure of this because Christ was raised from the dead, and he will never die again. Death no longer has any power over him. 10 When he died, he died once to break the power of sin. But now that he lives, he lives for the glory of God. 11 So I also should consider MYSELF to be dead to the power of sin and alive to God through Christ Jesus.

12 Do not let sin control the way I live; do not give in to sinful desires. 13 Do not let any part of MY body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give MYSELF completely to God, for I was dead, but now I have new life. So, use MY whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God. 14 Sin is no longer MY master, for I no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, I live under the freedom of God's grace.

15 Well then, since God's grace has set ME free from the law, does that mean I can go on sinning? Of course not! 16 Don't I realize that I became the slave of whatever I chose to obey? I can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or I can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living. 17 Thank God! Once I was a slave of sin, but now I wholeheartedly obey this teaching I have given you. 18 Now I am free from slavery to sin, and I have become slaves to righteous living.

19 Because of the weakness of MY human nature, Paul is using the illustration of slavery to help ME understand all this. Previously, I let myself be a slave to impurity and lawlessness, which led ever deeper into sin. Now I must give myself to be slaves to righteous living so that I will become holy.

20 When I was a slave to sin, I was free from the obligation to do right. 21 And what was the result?  I am now ashamed of the things I used to do, things that end in eternal doom. 22 But now I AM FREE from the power of sin and have become a slave of God. Now I do those things that lead to holiness and result in eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

Thank You Jesus for GRACE and your love!!

In our Romans Study of Chapter Five - I have to share this!! Gods Grace is BIGGER than any wrong we could have ever done!!  Adam = Sin = Eternal Death  --- JESUS = Grace=Forgiveness=Eternal Life.  8 times in these few verses Gods Word tells us over and over and over (8 TIMES) that His Grace is Wonderful and triumphs over sin. Thankful!

We are studying ROMANS - Come Along with us In Hondo Texas

Happy Birthday Jesus! Early

Gods Word is So Cool!!!

That probably sounds weird to some of you.

What that means to me is this: Gods Word never changes, the  circumstances and seasons of my life change all the time, but God is Faithful and is always there for me.

The answers to life are in the Word of God. I studied Psalms over a year ago, and one day last month I came across the study and chose to re study it. I started going through the lessons with my friend June, and we learned new and encouraging directions. The same verses, and new hope and direction because of our new seasons of life.

Be encouraged!!!

If you have a dream, a hope,  or a vision of something you have wanted to do for a long time, perseverance is the word and continue to learn everyday, just have to "keep on keepin on".
